When Talk Isn’t Enough: ART + IFS (Parts Work)

A quick primer on IFS

Internal Family Systems (IFS) understands us as having parts (protectors, firefighters, exiles) and a wise Self. When memories are hot, protectors work overtime.

Why pair ART with IFS?

ART helps update the charged memory/images that keep protectors on high alert. As the body settles, parts don’t need to push so hard—making IFS sessions smoother and kinder.

What a blended session can look like

  • Consent & choice: We confirm what feels right today.

  • Parts-aware targeting: Choose a memory/cue a protector wants help with.

  • ART sets + rescripting: Reduce distress; invite preferred imagery.

  • IFS debrief: Notice how protectors feel; check with Self about next steps.

Benefits clients report (varies)

  • Less reactivity around triggers

  • More space for curiosity and compassion toward parts

  • Smoother access to Self-leadership
